September 22 brings a fairly busy batch of home entertainment releases, with Toy Story 5, Scary Movie and Evil Dead Burn leading the new titles arriving on disc. There are also a couple of Criterion releases, several TV sets, catalog upgrades and a few movies making their digital debut.
Disney's Toy Story 5 arrives on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD. Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie and the rest of the toys are back, this time dealing with Lilypad, a tablet that becomes a very different kind of rival for Bonnie's attention. The movie earned $480.26 million at the domestic box office.
Alongside the standard editions, Disney is releasing a limited Steelbook with the film on 4K and Blu-ray plus a digital copy. A five-film Toy Story DVD collection is also due the same day.
The Scary Movie franchise is back as well. Paramount's new installment reunites Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans, with Cindy, Brenda, Shorty and Ray once again pulled into a horror-movie mess involving a new masked killer. The film will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD after earning $108.28 million domestically.
The disc release includes the theatrical cut. The longer version previously released digitally is available through the digital copy included with the Blu-ray.
Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment is also releasing Evil Dead Burn on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K. The latest entry follows a woman who, after losing her husband, stays with his family at their secluded home, only to watch the gathering turn into a nightmare as family members begin becoming Deadites. Souheila Yacoub, Tandi Wright, Hunter Doohan, Luciane Buchanan, Erroll Shand and Maude Davey star. The movie made $32.24 million at the domestic box office.
Criterion has two notable titles out this week. Kleber Mendonça Filho's The Secret Agent, starring Wagner Moura, arrives on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K. Set in Brazil in 1977, the film follows a man using the name Armando who arrives in Recife with his young son while trying to make a fresh start as violence and corruption close in around him.
Criterion's other Sept. 22 release is Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague, a black-and-white film about Jean-Luc Godard and the making of Breathless during the early days of the French New Wave. Both Criterion titles are getting 4K editions built from new masters.
Sony is releasing the comedy Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass on Blu-ray and DVD, while Boots Riley's I Love Boosters arrives on DVD and as a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray combo pack. A separate collector's Steelbook for I Love Boosters is scheduled for November.
TV collectors also have a few options. The eighth and final season of Outlander arrives on DVD and Blu-ray, along with a complete-series DVD collection. Landman: Season Two is also being released on both DVD and Blu-ray.
A few titles are digital-only for now. Super Troopers 3 becomes available to buy or rent digitally on Sept. 22, with Blu-ray and DVD editions following on Nov. 3. Eli Roth's Ice Cream Man also hits digital this week before its physical release on Oct. 20. The indie comedy Lucky Strikes is another new digital release.
There are some older titles getting upgraded editions too. Warner Bros. is bringing the 1994 Interview With the Vampire, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, to 4K digital and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Kino Lorber is releasing the 1996 Adam Sandler and Damon Wayans action comedy Bulletproof in 4K, sourced from a new scan of the original 35mm camera negative.
Guy Maddin's 1992 film Careful arrives on Blu-ray following a 4K restoration, while the 1987 Hong Kong horror comedy The Haunted Cop Shop gets a new Blu-ray edition from 88 Films with a 2K restoration, remastered Cantonese audio and newly translated English subtitles.
Between the new franchise releases, TV box sets and catalog upgrades, it's a stronger-than-usual Tuesday for anyone still buying movies on disc.
